TRANSPORTATION/MOBILITY AS A KEY IN SHAPING THE CITY
Lake Michigan and Illinois Michigan Canal were like a boon to the city of Chicago. They facilitated as the major trading and transportation mode in the initial years of development of the city. City was able to do the trading activities nationally as well as internationally. The network of railroad allowed the city to connect inwards with the different cities within USA. After World War II, development of expressways along with automobile accelerated growth of suburban sprawl. Chicago has one of the busiest airport in the world, O’ Hare International Airport. Increasing consciousness and awareness among the citizens made possible for the city of Chicago to have Bike Pathways well connected across the city. The downtown of Chicago is also well connected by Pedways which are safe and underground pedestrian walkways connecting the buildings and public transportation.
